Happy New Year! As the holiday decorations come down and we settle into the heart of a Minnesota and Wisconsin winter, many of us are spending a lot more time looking at our four walls.

Whether you’re planning to stay put for years or you’re starting to think about a move this spring, January is the perfect time to reset your home. You don’t need a massive renovation budget to make your house feel new again.

Here are eight "Homeowner Resolutions" to help you kick off 2026 with a fresh perspective and a well-maintained home.

1. Tackle the "Invisible" Clutter

We all have that one closet, the "junk drawer," or the corner of the basement that we’ve successfully ignored for months.

  • The Goal: Pick one small zone per week—start with the mudroom or the pantry.

  • Why it works: If you are thinking of selling later this year, you’re already 25% done with your packing. If you’re staying, you’ve just reclaimed a part of your home you can actually use.

2. Audit Your "Winter Wellness"

In the Midwest, our homes work hardest in January. Take ten minutes to do a quick wellness check:

  • Change your furnace filters: This is the easiest way to save on energy bills and keep your air clean while the windows are shut tight.

  • Check your detectors: It’s a great time to swap batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

  • Humidity Check: If you’re seeing frost on the inside of your windows or feeling too much static electricity, adjust your humidifier to keep your woodwork (and your skin!) happy.

3. Brighten Up the "Big Dark"

With the sun setting so early, lighting is everything.

  • The Refresh: Swap out old, yellow-toned lightbulbs for "Soft White" LEDs. It instantly makes a kitchen or living room feel cleaner and more modern. Adding a single floor lamp to a dark corner can completely change the mood of a room during a snowy evening.

4. Create a "Home Command Center"

The start of a new year usually means a flood of new schedules, school forms, and tax documents.

  • The Fix: Clear off one section of your kitchen counter or an entry table. Add a simple tray for mail and a calendar. A little bit of organization in January prevents a lot of stress when "tax season" rolls around in a few months.

5. Give Your Kitchen a "Mini-Makeover"

You don’t need a full demo to make your kitchen feel different.

  • The Update: Try swapping out the cabinet hardware. Replacing old knobs with modern matte black or brushed gold handles is a $50-$100 project that can be done in an afternoon but makes the whole room look updated. While you're at it, deep-clean the inside of your dishwasher and oven—your appliances will thank you!

6. Focus on "Floor Care"

Winter is tough on our floors with all the salt, slush, and sand being tracked in from the driveway.

  • The Maintenance: Take a morning to deep-clean your entry rugs and give your hardwood or LVP floors a proper polish with a manufacturer-approved cleaner. If you have carpets, January is actually a great time to steam clean them—the dry winter air helps them dry much faster than in the humid summer months.

7. Prep Your Entryway for "The Thaw"

It feels like a long way off, but the "March Melt" will be here before we know it.

  • The Pro-Tip: Check your mudroom or "drop zone." Do you have enough heavy-duty boot trays? Is there a place for wet mittens to actually dry? Organizing your entryway now prevents that "puddle of slush" mess that usually hits in late February.

8. Document Your Home

This is a "pro-tip" from the real estate world that every homeowner should do once a year.

  • The Benefit: Take your phone and walk through your house, filming a quick video of every room, including the inside of closets and the utility room. This is incredible to have for insurance purposes, but it’s also a great "Before" record if you decide to do any painting or DIY projects later this year.
